New ITF Project on e-Logistics Awarded
CECID has been awarded HK$6 million by the Hong Kong R&D Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management Enabling Technologies (LSCM R&D Centre) for a new project, “An e-Logistics Appliance with Data Conversion and Exchange Technologies for Infrastructure Connectivity”. On top of the ITF funding, the project received industry sponsorships from Azeus, DTTN, iASPEC, ICO, and Kerry Logistics. Commencing on 1 July 2007, the project will last for one and a half years.

Progress of Project Spinner – Business Document Composer and Business Document Feed Publisher Development Completed
Coined Project Spinner, the ITF project on "Extending Web 2.0 to Deliver E-Commerce Services" has completed the development of the project deliverables, Business Document Composer and Business Document Feed Publisher. The two deliverables are designed to empower existing Web 2.0 technologies with secure features and functionalities.

Successful Completion on Pilot Project “SAMS – Multi-protocol Messaging Gateway Integration using JBI”
CECID is pleased that the second version of Multi-protocol B2B Messaging Service Gateway, a deliverable of Project Plumber, has been completed. The Gateway is developed to provide a reliable and secure data exchange over the Internet. It provides a unified Web service interface for applications to exchange electronic documents with business partners using different B2B open-standard protocols.

Hermes Messaging Gateway v2.0 (H2O) Community Website Launched
CECID is pleased to announce the launch of Hermes Messaging Gateway v2.0 (H2O) community website to enhance support services to users. Since its release in June 2007, H2O has been downloaded and adopted by developers and users from over 40 economies around the world. The community website aims to provide useful information and articles ranging from technical issues to general usage of H2O in different platforms.

New Whitepaper Released
Further to five whitepapers on Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), CECID has recently released our research result in this area. CECID has developed a server called Observatory Service Broker (OSB), which is an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) with business process monitoring features. Some basic ideas on how the OSB works are described in the whitepaper.

Queenie Sung, Technical Analyst, joined CECID right after her graduation from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Queenie is happy to work in this lively workplace over the past 3 years. Her main job responsibilities are application design and technology solution delivery.

New Staff
CECID welcomes our Technical Analyst, Dan Chan. Dan brings in new ideas to CECID and works closely with the team on advanced Web technologies and applications.

Hermes Celebrated 5th Birthday with New H2O Launch
On 1 June 2007, CECID celebrated Hermes’ 5th birthday with the launch of a new open source version of Hermes Messaging Gateway v2.0 (H2O). Thanks to project funding from the HKSAR Government's Innovation & Technology Commission, Hermes is available as free, open source to users and developers of business-to-business integration and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).

Hermes Deployed by German Health Insurance Company for Document Exchange
The nationwide Germen Health Insurance Company Deutsche Betriebskrankenkasse (DBKK) has replaced its old application Electronic Platform for Medical Aids (EHP) with Hermes for document exchange. Fifteen partners of the company will use the ebXML interface to transfer documents. About 50,000 different business documents (~80% of all documents exchanged between partners) in the format of PDF and XML, will be handled per year. At this stage, 17 documents (e.g. cost estimates, PO, shipping receipts, etc.) that cover the entire process for transaction are in use.

Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) of the HKSAR Government Visit to CECID
Co-organized by OGCIO of the HKSAR Government and CECID, the visit aimed to explore how current e-commerce technologies can be employed to assist effective business operations. About 50 government officials from various HKSAR Government bureaux / departments attended and had a rewarding afternoon on 8 June 2007.

New Whitepaper and Podcast Released
With its commitment in disseminating e-commerce technologies and knowledge, CECID has released whitepapers and podcasts on different e-commerce topics via RSS and podcast feeds since October 2006. Recently, two whitepapers on Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), namely “Introduction to SOA” and “SOA Governance”, and the third podcast episode on Enterprise Information Architecture (EIA) have been released.

Rosanna Yip, Assistant Business Manager of CECID, is pleased to work with a team of energetic and friendly colleagues. With her expertise in Psychology and Human Resources Management, Rosanna is responsible for coordinating the development and production of CECID publicity, planning and managing event logistics, as well as overseeing HR functions of the Center. Rosanna is a perfectionist and always strives for excellence in work.

New Staff
CECID welcomes our Analyst Programmer, Patrick Yip. Right after his graduation from the University of Hong Kong, Patrick joined us to conduct research and development on e-commerce technologies.

CECID Enterprise Data Architect (EDA) Trial Version Released
CECID released a free software tool, Enterprise Data Architect (EDA) for trial use recently. EDA is a desktop application that facilitates business analysts, system analysts and application developers to develop an Enterprise Information Architecture. Many enterprises face common data interoperability problems during information exchange between different parties, and a well-designed enterprise information architecture tackles the root cause of these problems. EDA is a powerful tool designed to ensure the architecture created is standardized, readily reusable, and interoperable at both enterprise and industry levels.

CECID Website Provides RSS and Podcast Feeds
Since October 2006, CECID has provided RSS and podcast feeds in its website to enhance service level. Subscribers to the RSS feeds can get CECID's technology viewpoints and latest news headlines in their favourite environment using the RSS reader of their choice. Updates are delivered automatically as soon as they are published, and individuals can quickly review new content of interest. Subscriptions to podcast are also available for receiving new episodes automatically whenever they are broadcast. Alternatively, individuals can visit CECID's podcast webpage to download the podcast episodes they want to watch.

Project Plumber's Service Modeling Methodology Helps Garment Business Platform
Besides the completion of the Transaction Service Engine and Service Modeler, we have also applied the service modeling methodology to help our pilor project partner to design the XML Schema and produce data model documentation of the electronic documents by using our EDA. This pilot project partner, a large garment manufacturer, seeks a solution to facilitate the electronic documents exchange among the clients and suppliers in the procurement process of the garment industry. The project involves analysis of service oriented architecture in the company, and design of electronic document for message exchange.

Project Spinner's Research Report on e-Commerce Services Delivery with Web 2.0 Completed
The research report on e-commerce services delivery with Web 2.0 is completed. Through the preparation of this report, we explored current implementation models for Web 2.0 e-commerce applications as well as limitations and potential extension of Web 2.0 technologies in supporting e-commerce activities. Keep an eye on CECID's White Paper webpage (or subscribe to our RSS) for the release of the report.

Ronnie Kwok, Project Leader of R&D Team, has worked at CECID for 3 years. He is one of the key developers of CECID flagship messaging products, Hermes and B2B Connector. Ronnie is dedicated to enhancing both the functionality and usability of these products. Prior to joining CECID, he worked as an analyst in various companies, putting different web application projects into operation for clients in the banking and insurance industry.
