CECID Hermes H2O Facilitates Reliable Data Exchange for Supply Chain Integration in European Telecommunications Industry
Hong Kong SAR, Peoples Republic of China – 10 July 2009 – Center for E-Commerce Infrastructure Development (CECID), The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is pleased to announce that Hermes Messaging Gateway v2.0 (H2O) has been deployed in a supply chain management system by Connectiv-IT, a French consulting firm specialized in leading collaborative supply chain projects for large companies. Connectiv-IT leveraged CECID's acclaimed open-source software, Hermes H2O to implement a B2B integration solution between two European leading mobile phone companies. The system has been put in production, with about 1,000 business documents being sent and received through Hermes H2O each day.
The project involved a world leader mobile phone company and its subcontractor, a French original design mobile manufacturer. To enable efficient and collaborative supply chain management, there is a need to exchange all the business documents (e.g. purchase orders and dispatch advices) based on RosettaNet format (GS1 B2B standard for IT and Telco industry) between the two companies. Guaranteed, secured and trusted message exchange is practically crucial in this Telco context. It is because the documents may involve legal content requiring security and confidentiality procedures such as authentication, encryption and electronic signature. And some documents are closely linked to the physical flows of materials or finished goods and have a high business impact. For example, if the dispatch advice message has not been properly received and processed by their factories in China, this may generate expensive costs due to over delays on product deliveries from China to France .
Thanks to Hermes H2O, Connectiv-IT proposed a full B2B solution - Connect-TELCO - at a considerably low cost, yet achieved a same level of services compared with those commercial counterparts available in the market. Supporting both ebXML Messaging Service (ebMS) and Applicability Specification 2 (AS2), Hermes H2O served as the reliable messaging gateway for this supply chain management system. The project leader of Connectiv-IT explained that the major reasons for using Hermes H2O were due to its cost of ownership, performance and reliability to fulfill the project requirements. As Hermes H2O and its source code being open-source, Connective-IT can get it for free and customize it to cater for the project needs. He added that, “Throughout the implementation process, the integration of Hermes H2O was very smooth. The integration was facilitated by the use of Web Services and the open source community support from the CECID Team. Our client benefits today from a reliable messaging system together with a global B2B platform fully integrated with ERP. Drawing on success model of this project, we have no hesitation in recommending out clients to adopt Hermes H2O in future projects.” The project team in CECID is delighted to learn about the surge of interest and adoption of open source software in the commercial sector and shall continue to be devoted to share its R&D results and foster the development of the open source community.
