Data protection in portable devices has become a hot topic recently. Existing data encryption solutions seem not providing an adequate protection. Center for E-commerce Infrastructure Development (CECID) of The University of Hong Kong has researched and developed a novel technology, namely Multi-Factor Data Protection (MFDP) offering a powerful and promising data protection solution. It employs AES cryptology, which is endorsed and used by many governments to protect top-secret level documents, to encrypt the sensitive content. Moreover, MFDP locks the portable storage with a secret known to some designated computers only. In case the USB storage is lost, the malicious user would be unable to decrypt the content even he/she can guess the password correctly.

Hong Kong SAR, Peoples Republic of China – 17 March 2010 – Center for E-Commerce Infrastructure Development (CECID), The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is pleased to share a proved, practical and powerful solution – OneLock – to combat data leakage. It offers an unprecedented level of data protection for any off-the-shelf USB storage devices.

Thanks to project funding from the HKSAR Government’s Innovation & Technology Commission , CECID has recently researched and developed a novel technology, Multi-Factor Data Protection, which aims to enhance data protection over the current existing solutions in the market while staying as easy-to-use as possible. An application – OneLock – has been devised to implement this technology to protect data in USB storage devices.

With OneLock, you can turn any off-the-shelf USB storage into a vault. Data in the storage device is encrypted with AES cryptology which is a highly acclaimed data protection technology and is adopted by many governments to protect top secret level documents. Conventionally, a user-defined password is used to unlock the encryption key. To improve data security, retrieval of encrypted content is confined to your designated computers using the right password. In case your USB storage is lost or being stolen, even a hacker can crack your password, without your designated computer, the information there can’t be read. Furthermore, OneLock completely eliminates data leakage threat by allowing you the data owner to destroy the encryption key planted in the designated computer, sealing the lost USB storage forever.

To ensure data privacy in your USB storage, check out OneLock NOW. It’s free for download from http://community.cecid.hku.hk/index.php/product/onelock/.

Data leakage remains a public concern after an overwhelming number of personal data loss incidents were reported. This data privacy problem has induced a pressing need to strengthen data security governance policies and their enforcement technologies. To mitigate the data leakage risk, CECID will research and develop a scalable centralized data security infrastructure. A novel technique called multi-factor encryption will be devised to control access privileges for different data users, including those who need remote data access over the Internet and data storage on portable devices.

Commenced in April 2009, this two-year project has received HK$6.58 million funding from the Innovation and Technology Commission of Hong Kong Government and sponsorship from industry partners. Please visit the project webpage at http://www.cecid.hku.hk/projecthare.php for details.

Software as a Service (SaaS),has become a new model of software deployment, operation, and maintenance. SaaS allows vendors to operate business applications for customers as Web Services on the Internet to ease software deployment and maintenance while customers can also pay to use the applications on demand to amortize software costs. However, for software providers and users to enjoy these benefits, they need to enable legacy applications to exchange data in Web Services. While redevelopment of existing applications would incur considerable additional investments, the benefits bought by SaaS might become unjustified.

In this regard, the Center for E-Commerce Infrastructure Development (CECID) aims to research and develop a Universal Web Services Adaptor technology to ease building Web Services wrapper for existing applications. This project has received HK$1 Million funding from the Innovation and Technology Commission of Hong Kong Government with sponsorship and support from industry partners. Led by Prof. David Cheung, the project has commenced since Sept 2008 and will be completed in 18 months.
